We recently caught up with our new Recruitment Manager, Carol-Ann, to learn more about her background, what she’s most looking forward to in the role, and what drives her outside of work.
Tell us a bit about your background
Before moving into recruitment, I worked in a range of administrative roles – from car sales admin to a weighbridge operative for a recycling company. I also spent some time in the Civil Service, which I really enjoyed, though it was a temporary post.
Recruitment wasn’t something I planned to go into, it sort of fell into my lap. I started as a recruitment administrator and within two years had progressed to manager. Once I got started, I realised how much I enjoyed it. No two days are ever the same, and you meet such a variety of people.
What made you want to join Lucas Love Healthcare?
From my very first meeting with the Managing Director and Nurse Manager, I got a great feeling about the company. There was a genuine warmth and professionalism, and I knew it was somewhere I could grow and make a difference. After meeting the wider team, I was certain I’d made the right choice.
What does your role involve?
As Recruitment and Compliance Manager, I oversee the recruitment process and make sure all training, documentation, and compliance checks are fully up to date. I want the team to feel supported and confident in their roles, while continuously looking for ways to make our processes more efficient.
Every agency works in its own way, so I’m keen to bring a fresh perspective and explore new ways of working that help both the team and our candidates.
What are you most looking forward to in this role?
Getting to know the team and our members, learning how things are done here, and helping to strengthen what already works well. I’m looking forward to supporting the team as we continue to grow and deliver a great experience for everyone we work with.
How would you describe your approach to recruitment?
Head-on and honest. I believe in being upfront and fair, you can usually tell when someone’s being genuine. I always try to treat people the way I’d want to be treated: with respect, transparency, and care.
What do you enjoy most about working with healthcare professionals?
I have huge respect for healthcare professionals, they’re some of the most dedicated and compassionate people you’ll meet. It’s rewarding to know you’re helping them find roles that make a real difference. I love seeing how people progress and being part of that journey.
What makes a good first impression when applying for a role?
Your attitude and how you present yourself are everything. Confidence, politeness, and professionalism go a long way. I notice how people engage during the interview, how they communicate, and the effort they put into preparing.
How do you make sure candidates feel supported?
Communication is key. I like to keep candidates updated and make sure they’re never left wondering what’s happening next. Sometimes things like background checks can cause delays, so I always explain what’s going on and stay in touch, often through WhatsApp, as it’s the quickest way to reach people.
Regular check-ins and appraisals help too. Listening and following up on any issues is the best way to make people feel valued.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love reading, especially Colleen Hoover’s books, and spending time with family and friends. I try to fit in two holidays abroad each year, enjoy an early morning gym session, and do the occasional cold sea dip to start the day!
I’m also a huge Take That fan, I know every word, every song, and every dance routine.
Each year I take part in a charity event for causes like suicide awareness or prostate cancer. One of my favourite experiences was doing a “Strictly Come Dancing” fundraiser, terrifying at the time, but great fun.
